It's the differences from your own culture that you notice most when you visit another country. And the work ethic I experienced in Japan is very different to that of the UK.

It's not unusual for Japanese Salary Men — and their female equivalent, Office Ladies — to work more than twelve hours a day. Demonstrating commitment to the team by taking minimal or no vacation is also common and the almost obligatory after-work drinking culture means that it's not unruly youths you see staggering around drunk but besuited salary men.
